Background: This post was prompted by another blogpost a few weeks ago by a friend of mine and rather than leave this lengthy, rambling commentary on her blog, http://www.driftingintofocus.com/, I am posting my lengthy, rambling thoughts here. On her blog, she had responded to the following statement:
"Art comes from the heart. Craft comes from the head."
Nope, can' t say I agree with this statement, but who cares if I do or don't? I think art is personal. If others believe this to be true, then it's true. For them. I've seen art and craft that come from both the head and heart. Most recognize and appreciate the heart that goes into Ilana Shafir's art: http://www.shafirart.com/mosaics.html , and someone please tell me that Jo Braun: http://www.jo-braun.com/currentdirections.html does not have a cerebral message within her art or put any thought into her art. Yes, Art. From her head. And her heart.
I've seen art created from the heart that I don't like. And I've seen craft created from the head that I do. Some artists instinctively create without much need for "how to" instruction. Some (like me) desperately need validation and instruction to know "if I'm doing it right". So what? (I am scheduled to take a workshop with Ilana Shafir, and I can't wait for her to inspire me to just quit thinking about things.)
For my own personal "art", and I'll take the liberty of calling it that since this is my blog party, it comes from both my head and/or heart. And some of it is art, and some of it is craft. And some of it is good, and some of it is crap. That's okay, too. First of all, I create my art for myself. I love the process, and sometimes I love the result. Secondly, if my art makes someone else feel good (heart) or think (head), then that's a bonus. If they actually like it, double bonus. If they actually buy it, home run.
My point is, does it really matter? This world is too full of war, poverty, unemployment, disease, and bitterness. Does it really matter who thinks what about art? Expert opinion or not?
This world I love is also full of creative, soulful, giving , and thinking people. I really don't care if someone creates something that I like and it is purely, and solely, beautiful; or if it is beautiful and useful, or if one is not an expert, or if it didn't come from one's heart, or it didn't come from one's head. I'm just glad someone decided to give me a little bit of them, and I thank them for bringing a little smile to my face, or for making me think they are clever. Shouldn't we all just be glad that some people want to create anything? I've decided that we can find true, valid, unquestionable art in anything if we look for it; whether its in a cloud formation, the symmetry of architecture, the construction of a poem, or a smiley face on a dirt-dusted windshield.
Violets are blue
Roses are red
Who cares if my art
Comes from my head?
