Unfinished work

Do you have unfinished work in your studio?   I have quite a bit.  And each piece has a different reason that it remains unfinished.

marble, smalti, unglazed porcelain
The first piece I started over a year ago. I was so excited to finally articulate what I had been seeing in my mind. But once I started putting tile to substrate, something was lacking.  After a month of piecemeal work, I literally shelved it, and upon the shelf, it still sits.

The next piece I started this fall, and it's almost finished.  But it has some framing issues and finishing touches to be added before I would call it finished. It's not one of my favorite pieces, (seen here in the mediocre photo that I also should've shelved),  but it was also the first time I worked with ceramic pottery.   My ceramicist friend Maya gave me some discards, so I used them to create the piece.  I can't say I enjoyed working on this piece.  I found the shards to be difficult to work with.  I had intended to finish this in time for a solo exhibition that my friend was having at a local gallery.    I ran out of time (and steam),  so it too, now sits on the shelf.  This is also the first triptych I've ever done

So far. just a stained glass bg, but will have more layers.
The third piece is a piece I started in January.  I conceptualized this piece a few years ago, I finally got a chance to start it, and then, wasn't happy with the colorization.  Let's  just go ahead and say I hated it.  So, I just quit working on it.  It sat on my work bench staring at me for months.  I've been busier than usual this spring, and really did not have the time to further the conversation that it was trying to have with me. I only recently ventured out to the studio, and ripped up half of what I had started.  It's now again a WIP and I am pleased with my revisions and hope to find the time to finish it sometime before summer.

The last piece is the piece I started in a mosaic workshop at SAMA in Austin, TX.   It's incomplete mostly because of a lack of time, but it too, has other issues (or maybe they're my issues).  I think I like  it for the most part, but also feel it's not "my" work.   One can look at it, and because it has distinctive (and beautiful) ceramic pieces created  by another mosaic artist, (Ilana Shafir) it seems to have the look of that artist, rather than me.  Look for more thoughts on this piece in my next blog post.

And speaking of blog posts,  I have six blog posts that I've started and am kindof working on, but can't seem to finish.  Mostly because I feel they need a visual component and I  CANNOT FIND THE TIME TO CREATE AND FINISH a worthy visual component.

Unfortunately, I have no inspiration to pass along to you, no motivational words.  If you happen to have any, please send them my way.   I hope to finish all of these in 2011.  Time will tell.

Hey there, Carolyn, how did I get so behind on your posts? Sorry! I am looking forward to moving through the next ones, because I know I saw something about Ilana. You never did ask the question "how did you like Ilana's class" the two times I asked! I guess I'll find out :-) V

This blog is mostly about my artwork, or inspiration for my artwork.  You may find details about a current work in progress, or a finished piece.  Sometimes, you may only find a photo that I've taken, or something else I feel the need to share.   It just may take me awhile to find my blog voice and share my mostly misunderstood attempt at wit with you.  Or not.  Hope you find something worthwhile.  Please feel free to have a look around my website as well.
